  2. Turn to pages 74-75 • Read the title and look at the illustrations. • Predict what the poem is about. • Listen as the first two stanzas are read aloud.

  3. Read the rest of the poem aloud with me. Pay attention to the rhyme pattern.

  4. What makes the new kid a great player? • Do you think the poem was written in the present or in the past? Why? • Were you surprised to learn that the new kid was a girl?

  5. Let’s analyze two characters from “Mighty Jackie” • Reread pages 62-63. • Turn to the next empty page in your reading folder and answer these questions: 1. How did Jackie’s father help her to grow up feeling confident about her abilities as a baseball player?

  6. What did Mr. Mitchell’s actions show about him? • What did Dazzy Vance’s actions show about the kind of person he was?

  7. Copy this chart in your reading folder. Work with a partner to fill in as much as you can.
