  1. The Urinary System Group 6 4th period

  2. The overall function of the Urinary System • Overall function of the urinary system is to filter and remove wastes in the body • the urinary system is made up of four major organs: the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra • Without the uirnary system, the body would have almost no way of filtering the blood and removing the wastes • These wastes (urine) must be rid from the body to maintain homeostasis

  3. Organs of the Urinary System • Kidneys- filter the blood to make urine • Ureters- carry the urine to the bladder • Bladder- stores the urine for 2-5 hours • Urethra- disposes of the urine out of the body

  4. Kidneys • They Kidneys are the most important organ of the urinary system • The kidneys are responsible for filtering blood in the body through the Renal vein and Renal artery • The blood is then filtered of harmful wastes • These wastes produce urine • The urine is then transported to the ureters

  5. Ureters • The Ureters are small tubes that connect to the kidneys and bladder. • About every ten to fifteen seconds, small amounts of urine are transported from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder • Every 10 to 15 seconds a small amount or urine travels through the ureters to be bladder

  6. Bladder • The urine is stored in the bladder • The bladder is usually emptied every two to five hours • The bladder holds an average of two cups of urine

  7. Urethra • The Urethra is the opening that carries the urine out of the body. • The urethra works when the brain signals the muscles to open and the urine exits the body.

  8. Common health risks in the Urinary System • Urinary Tract Infection • A Urinary tract infection is caused when bacteria starts to grow in the urine • A urinary tract infection usually starts in the urethra and then travels through the bladder to the ureters and then the kidneys • Urine is sterile, but outside contact from the urethra causes the infection in the urine • A urinary tract infection is very dangerous if not treated early, because once it makes it’s way to the ureters and kidneys it then causes a kidney infection

  9. Common health risks in the Urinary System (ctd.) • Kidney Infection • A kidney infection is caused when urine is at a standstill and is not leaving the body, as a result of a uirnary tract infection • Kidney infections affect the kidneys and the ureters • Kidney infections are treated with antibiotics and lots of water intake

  10. Possible COD • Kidney failure due to possible diabetes • When the glucose levels in the blood are consistently high, it effects the kidney’s ability to filter blood. • Kidney failure as a result of diabetes is common in Latinos

  11. Only time will tell… ::Cue The Who music ::

  12. Other systems relating to the urinary system • The cardiovascular system relates to the urinary system, because once the blood is filtered through the kidneys it travels back to the heart. • The nervous system relates to the urinary system, because when one urinates the brain signals the urethra muscles to contract.
