  1. Re-Drawing WWI By: Mr. Brady

  2. MAIN causes of WWI • Due to the militarism, alliance system that formed, imperialism, and budding nationalistic feeling throughout Europe, World War 1 was a war waiting to happen. The War could have begun anywhere, but it began in a remote part of Eastern Europe.

  3. Alliance Systems formed: Triple Entente or Allies • Outline England, France, and Russia in blue. • These 3 countries made up the alliance system known as the Triple Entente.

  4. Triple Alliance or Central Powers • Outline Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy in red. • These 3 countries made up the Triple Alliance or the Central Powers. These countries lie in the center of Europe. They wanted to control all of Eastern Europe, including the Balkans.

  5. The Balkans AKA “the Powderkeg” • Outline Bosnia in Green • This region is nicknamed the Balkans. The Balkans was the “Powderkeg of Europe” as one spark and all of Europe would have exploded.

  6. Sarajevo, Bosnia • In purple, underline Sarajevo, Bosnia • This is where the inflammatory incident (that event that ignited the powderkeg and led to War) occurred.

  7. Balkans • Countries like Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia wanted to control this region (imperialism)—to get from Europe to the oil-rich Middle East; you must travel through the Balkans. • Plus the countries of the Balkans-Bosnia, Serbia, Romania wanted to become independent nation states due to their Nationalistic desires.

  8. Question • What made the Balkans such a “powderkeg” and hotbed (source) of conflict?

  9. The inflammatory incident: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of 1914 • Archduke Franz Ferdinand-the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne gets assassinated while touring Bosnia. • GavriloPrincip, a Serbian nationalist (one who wants Serbia to be independent), shoots Ferdiand in 1914. • Princip is part of the terrorist organization known as the black hand. Princip

  10. Question • What was the inflammatory incident that triggered (instigated) WWI? • Who were the people/countries involved?

  11. Chain of events that lead to War Soon after the assassination, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia; Russia-outlined in blue mobilized for war to support Serbia. Germany declared war on both Russia and France. Germany in turn declared war on both Russia and France.

  12. German attacks in the West • England and France wanted to stop Germany from expanding its power. Everybody expected Germany to invade Easter France. Instead, the Germans rolled through Belgium and attacked northern France. In red, draw a dotted line from Berlin to Brussels.

  13. THE WESTERN FRONT: • Draw a thick BLACK line from Belgium to Northern France • THIS IS THE WESTERN FRONT (where most of the fighting was done between the two sides.

  14. War of Attrition • The soldiers on both sides dug trenches facing each other. • With the trenches, and new weaponry like machine guns, barbed wire fences, flame throwers, and gas chemicals, neither side was able to gain much ground. • Draw an hour glass on the Western Front to symbolize the large amount of time that expired.

  15. Question • Why was WWI a War of Attrition? • Include the new forms of technological advancements in weaponry

  16. The Eastern Front • In blue shade Poland. • TheRussians and Germans fought here. Russian soldiers were peasants who were poorly trained and had very little food, clothing, or ammunition. • Russia was like Goliath—gigantic, but slow. • Germany was like Germany David—quick and smart

  17. Russian Revolution • When the Russians at home heard that so many of their soldiers were dying without proper supplies, they grew upset at Czar Nicholas II-the leader of Russia. • Russian citizens rose in revolt and overthrew Czar Nicholas II in 1917; right in the middle of the War.

  18. USA enter WWI in 1917 • Draw a dotted line from the Atlantic Ocean to Paris • Just like when it seemed like Germany was going to beat England and France, the United States joined the Triple Entente

  19. USA helps the Triple Entente win • USA’s arrival was a huge morale boost to the allies. • The Germans who had fought for 3 years had to face a fresh American army.
