  1. Purpose of the Meeting • To hear about the exciting science being proposed for SNOLAB, and at other labs around the world. • To develop an optimized roadmap for SNOLAB: • We have a lab: We are ready to install experiments. • We have operations support to maintain and operate the lab • We have some money to get experiments integrated into the lab • We have a range of experiments at various stages of design and R&D • How do we bring this all together, focus the resources (people and money), to get the richest possible scientific program going as soon as possible. SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  2. SNOLAB: A New International Facility for Underground Astroparticle Physics Funding/Operations Report T. Noble Queen’s University SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  3. A Brief History of SNOLAB • 2001 Canada Foundation for Innovation Calls for proposals…International Joint Venture fund. • 2002 Somebody has the bright idea that we should apply. • 2002 April. FedNor Provides 95k$ to develop proposal. • 2002 Funding awarded by CFI 38.9 M$ for underground facility. • 2003 Funding awarded (OIT, FedNor, NOHFC, CFI) 10.4 M$ for surface facility. • 2004 June. Construction of building begins….after the ground thaws enough. • 2004 June. Excavation of Phase I begins underground. • 2005 July. Surface building complete and occupied. Old construction trailers demolished with excessive enthusiasm. • 2007 June. Excavation of Phase I complete • 2007 June. Excavation of Phase II begins • 2007 August. Funding for Phase II approved • 2008 May-June Excavation of Phase II complete • 2008 October. Entire Facility to be complete….about 2 months ahead of schedule. SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  4. Operations Funding Milestones: 2007/8: Need ~3,500 k$ April 2007 NSERC GSC 19: 1,275 k$ May 2007 Apply for ORF-RE decision delayed by election (ont) July 2007 Apply for CECR Sept 2007 CECR says No Nov 2007 Money ~gone. No sign of any new funds. Dec 2007 NSERC AdHoc 1,510 k$ • 800 k$ in FY 07/08 • 710 k$ in FY 08/09 conditional CFI AdHoc 2,785 k$ 2 Calendar years. • Conditional on governance review (Feb 2008…waiting) Feb 2008 ORF-RE 18 M$ April 07 - March 13 Member Universities • Committed to support at level of 500 – 700 k$/year to cover non-eligible expenses (normally covered by Universities) SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  5. SNOLAB Operations Funding This is what we need from NSERC next year SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  6. Additional Resources: There is a “modest” amount of residual money in the CFI construction budget that will be used to support general infrastructure equipment for the lab. This could also be used to support some specific experiment needs of an infrastructure nature, (for example, cranes, tanks, shielding). This money, part of the directors budget, is available to all experiments to make a case for. A formal request for support should follow feasibility discussions with SNOLAB. As construction ends, the exact value amount available becomes better defined. We will be able to make firm commitments to a number of projects very soon. SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  7. Personnel: Recent or Planned new Hires • Electrician • Cleaners and Cleaner/Maintainers • Mechanical maintainer • Millwright • Systems Operator • Operations Engineer • Mechanical Design Engineer • HR administrator/exec assistant • Scientific Education/Outreach • Postdoctoral Fellow • SNOLAB Director Ramp up in personnel to get lab clean, and to work at integration of experiments. SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  8. SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  9. The Experiment Advisory Committee EAC Mandate • The committee will provide expert advice to the director on the SNOLAB scientific program. This includes: • Initial Experimental Evaluation. This will normally be based on a Letter of Interest (LOI) submitted by the collaboration. • Evaluation of Full Proposals requesting an allocation of space in SNOLAB • The ongoing review of the Scientific Program and Progress of Experiments. • The committee will also provide recommendations on the allocation of Space and Resources for detectors. SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008

  10. Summary • Lab is ready now to begin installation of experiment specific infrastructure. • Skilled technical staff, engineering and scientific support for experiments. • Funding from the Province of Ontario for 6 years of operation…will be used to leverage matching from Federal sources. First 2.5 years of Federal money in place. • Some money available to support equipment/integration of experiments…to be spent soon. SNOLAB is open for business! Highest priority now is to get experiments fully funded. designed, reviewed and installed. SNOLAB 2008 Sudbury Oct 4th, 2008
