  2. Mission Statement(from website) • To establish, stimulate, and maintain quality technical and professional approaches in all areas of Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics. • In furtherance of this mission the Division shall devote itself specifically to: • The advancement and dissemination of knowledge of thermal and hydraulic phenomena as they pertain to the steady state design or transient performance of equipment in nuclear power plants and other segments of the nuclear fuel cycle. • Aid in the integration and dissemination of thermal hydraulics information developed in research and design programs and from experience with operating nuclear reactors. • Promote effective interchange of thermal hydraulics information among the many professional groups and organizations participating in the development and application of nuclear reactor technology. • Provide a basis for interaction between the nuclear industry and regulatory groups.

  7. THD GovernanceCommunications • Web Page • THD website updated multiple times each year • http://thd.ans.org • Includes: • Mission statement • Committee structure, member names, meeting minutes • Newsletter archives • Bylaws, Manual, Rules and Procedures • Awards information • Newsletters • 2 newsletters published every year since 2005

  8. Alignment with ANSNational Strategic Plan Professional development Through strong support of technical presentations by THD members at the national meetings, embedded topical meetings, NUTHOS and NURETH conferences, members have an opportunity to interact with other members in the field, to have immediate feedback on their technical work, and to have the opportunity to have important technical interchanges.  THD provides travel support to its student members for presenting their technical work at these conferences. Sharing information and advancements in technology The ANS THD sponsored NURETH (International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics) conference series is the premier technical meeting for thermal hydraulic fundamentals, computer codes, experimental techniques, methods, and related design analysis. High-quality papers from NURETH proceedings are also selected for publication in reputable journals. Engaging the public There are no formal THD programs in place that explicitly address this point. Engaging the policy makers There are no formal programs or processes in place; however, issues related to policy topics including loss-of-coolant accidents, severe accidents, and design requirements are often discussed in papers that are presented at THD sponsored conferences, special workshops and sessions at the national meetings.

  9. SummaryConference Participation • ANS National Meeting Participation • 2012 Annual Meeting – 7 sessions, 35 summaries • 2012 Winter Meeting – 6 sessions, 41 summaries • 2013 Annual Meeting – 7 sessions, 41 summaries • 2013 Winter Meeting – 14 sessions, 86 summaries • Topicals • NURETH-14 (Toronto, 2011), NURETH-15 (Pisa, 2013): Class II • NUTHOS-9 (2012), NUTHOS-10 (2014): Class IV • Embedded Topicals(2012, 2014): Class III

  10. Summary • Areas of Success • Healthy Division membership trends • Increased international participation in all division areas • Increased participation of students and young members • Flagship topical continues to thrive • Embedded topical has been well received • Active member participation in technical meetings and Society activities • Significant number of member publications • Continued support for student scholarships and student travel to the national meetings • Spending plan implemented to ensure financial stability of the division

  11. Summary • Focus for Future Action • Be more relevant to members that do not attend THD conferences • More regular funding sources • Increase rigor of peer-review process for THD sessions and topicals • Maintain engagement with students and young members • Enhance communication at all levels • Make governance more transparent to all members • Make EC aware of all of the actions done by or behalf of THD • Need help regarding IT support • Promote further collaboration with other Divisions and societies • Provide additional professional development programs
