CURRENT PROJECTS • Regional Approach to Bio-safety for Southern African Countries” (RABSAC): Addressing Agricultural Biotechnology and Bio-safety Policy issues to Improve Food Security in the SADC • Competence Platform on Energy Crop and Agro-forestry Systems for Arid and Semi-arid Ecosystems – Africa (“COMPETE”) • Agricultural growth and poverty trends in Southern Africa • Water resource development and management in the Olifant river basin: a multi-disciplinary synthesis

Title:Institutionalizing FANRPAN as a Recognized Source of Research-Based Policy Analysis and Advocacy • Objectives: • To institutionalize FANRPAN’s regional capacity for policy research and complete one high-priority policy research activity to have immediate impacts (on input vouchers) • Collaborators: • Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia • Funding Partner: • USAID $300,000

Title: Regional Policy Dialogues and Publications • Objectives: • Increase stakeholders’ engagement in regional food and agriculture policies – supports dialogue, information dissemination. • Collaborators: • RECs; regional civil society organizations, Government • Funding Partner: • CTA $190,000

  7. Title: FARA Bridging Funds • Objectives: • To provide temporary core support to FANRPAN until DFID funds become available. • Collaborators: • FANRPAN secretariats – regional and national • Funding Partner: • FARA $50,000

Title: Regional Dialogue on the Policy implications and Responses to the Impact of HIV & AIDS on agriculture and food security in the SADC region • Objectives: • To stimulate an urgent regional policy response towards improved quantification, forecasting and mitigation of HIV and Aids • Collaborators: • SADC, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa • Funding Partner: • Southern Africa Trust - $50,000

Title: Developing a Statistical Index - The Household Vulnerability Index (HVI) • Objectives: • To develop a statistical index for quantifying vulnerability as a means of improving targeting of impact responses • Collaborators: • SADC, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe • Funding Partner: • Southern Africa Trust $50,000

Title: Regional Approach to Biosafety for Southern African Countries” (RABSAC): Addressing Agricultural Biotechnology and Bio-safety Policy issues to Improve Food Security in the SADC • Objectives: • support the goal of increased rural incomes, through (i) facilitating the application of biotechnologies and GM product deployment to increase agricultural productivity; (ii) reducing barriers to agricultural trade of GM commodities • Collaborators: • South Africa, Mauritius, and Malawi, led by University of Pretoria • Funding Partner: • USAID, US Grains Council and IFPRI- PBS$51,950

Title: Competence Platform on Energy Crop and Agro-forestry Systems for Arid and Semi-arid Ecosystems – Africa (“COMPETE”) • Objectives: • To identify pathways for the provision of bio-energy; FANRPAN leads the policy work package. • Collaborators: • 48 partners globally; leader is WIP – Renewable Energies, Germany FANRPAN’s lead institution is CARD (Bunda College, Malawi) • Funding Partners • European Commission$75,000

  12. Title: Agricultural growth and poverty trends in Southern Africa • Objectives: • To facilitate a SAKSS workshop. Balance was to produce agricultural and poverty trend analyses in four countries • Collaborators: • Universities of Pretoria, Eduardo Mondlane; CARD-Bunda College in Malawi; FSRP in Zambia • Funding Partners • SAKSS-SA$44,000

Title: Water resource development and management in the Olifant river basin: a multi-disciplinary synthesis • Objectives: • To synthesize research on the Olifants Basin related to water productivity, poverty, and development in the basin • Collaborators: • Funding Partners: • IWMI-Comprehensive Assessment$22,000
