  2. To be considered for nomination, a picture book must meet the following criteria: • be published within the last 3 years • Still be in print • the book's author or illustrator must be from the US • not be a title previously nominated

  9. The 2009 Nominees are:

  10. Bats at the Beachby: Brian Lies Quick, call out! Tell all you can reach: the night is just perfect for bats at the beach! Wing your way to the beach with this bunch of fuzzy bats.

  11. Bear’s Pictureby: Daniel Pinkwater Bear is painting a picture when two men try to tell him that bears don’t paint.

  12. Bedtime at the swampby: Kristyn Crow It’s bedtime at the swamp, but somebody’s not ready… who could it be?

  13. Big chickens fly the coopby: Leslie Helakoski Four chickens set out to find the farmhouse… but they don’t know what a farmhouse looks like!

  14. Little blue truckby: Alice Schertle Blue is a truck with “big rig” pluck. Good thing he is around when a big rig gets stuck in the mud.

  15. Tadpole Rexby: Kurt Cyrus A small tadpole decides to take on the dinosaur world.

  16. Those darn squirrelsby: Adam Rubin Old Man Fookwire loves birds but not squirrels. What will he do when the birds fly south for the winter?

  17. Too many toysby: David Shannon Spencer owns too many toys but giving them away is hard work.

  18. A visitor for bearby: Bonny Becker Bear doesn’t like visitors but just can’t seem to make mouse understand he isn’t welcome.

  19. Waking Beautyby: Leah Wilcox Prince Charming is a horrible listener… so he just can’t figure out how to wake Beauty.

  20. The author and illustrator of the winning book will receive a crystal award created by Pepi Herrmann Crystal.
