VolsTeach is a program targeted for undergraduate math and science majors who are interested in expanding their professional skills and exploring a career in teaching. Without any additional credit hours, students can graduate in four years with a content area degree in math or science as well as attain licensure as highly qualified teachers in their respective content areas. Beginning freshman year or in the Step 1 course, VolsTeach students have opportunities to teach in K-12 classrooms and throughout most of their teaching (pedagogy) courses. http://volsteach.utk.edu
Current Enrollment • 32 Students in Step 1 • 30 students in Step 2
TEACH/Here is a teacher residency program that recruits, prepares, and supports science and mathematics teachers to serve in high needs schools. The program operates in Chattanooga and Knoxville, TN school districts in partnership with University of Tennessee Knoxville and the Public Education Foundation. http://teachhere.org/
Current Numbers: • 18 pre-service teachers • 8 science • 10 Mathematics
UTK/Knox County Pre-Collegiate Research Scholars Program • The program's goal is to develop a model for hosting high school students in UT research laboratories so that they may experience the excitement of scientific research and engage in their own original research. • http://service.utk.edu/pre-collegiate/
Current Research Projects • Pedagogical Content Knowledge(PCK) • Development of a Quantitative Instrument to Measure High School Science Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge. • Measuring the Impact of Elementary School Teachers’ PCK on Students’ Conceptual Understanding of Energy, Force and Motion and Electrical Circuits.
Current Research Projects • Assessment • Science Teachers’ Assessment Literacy. • Argumentation • Understanding the role of argumentation in helping high school students to appropriate the epistemic and social norms of science. • Authentic Scientific Inquiry
