STEM at USNA A Different Approach to Recruiting and Retaining TechnologistsMETHODOLOGY: Engage elementary/middle/high school students and teachers in a wide variety of science and engineering activities (camps, minicamps, competitions, site visits, short courses, internships) to initiate interest and enthusiasm for future STEM participation in academic and career choices, using outstanding USNA resources as a backdrop for the activities. Unique approach defined by a project based curriculum, focusing on current topics, and a pyramid structure with practicing technologists, educators, mentors at the top. USNA STEM Learning Modules SCIENCE & ENGINEERING DAYS STEM CAMPS • Grades 7-9 S&T from across US (48 States) • Grades 10-11 interning week • Topics = Math,CS,Oceanography,Phys, Chem, MechE, ElecE, SystemsE, AeroE, OceanE • Project Based using curriculum from IntroEng, Alice, Sea Perch Aps, NXT Robotics, Navy contractor support • 5 days overnight camps with Academic, Team Building, Social and Sports activities • Girls Day Camp variation • ES, MS, HS students & teachers from Local Communities within bussing distance • Tailored Programs to meet curriculum needs of visiting school • Day-long Project Based Interactive Program (Hydrodynamics, Biometrics, Robotics, Sea Perch Aps, Bridge Building, Physics, Chem…) • Rotation through activities in small groups • Scheduled as requested Mini-STEMs ADVANCED PROGRAM • HS students & teachers • along East Coast • Tailored Programs to meet curriculum needs • Project Based Interactive Program (Robotics, Satellites, Bridge Building, Flight & Sea Simulations, YP Rides, Mechanics, Materials …) • Overnight stay and sporting event • Rotation through activities in small groups • Scheduled as requested • Local Middle School students • Topics in Math, CS, Oceanography, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering • Project Based • 5 evening sessions, 2-3 hours per session • Scheduled Fall, Spring, Summer • .
