  1. Migrating from NOVELL to ACTIVE DIRECTORY I am going to go through this quickly. This PowerPoint is in the Common folder on the I drive. If you want to see it again.

  2. Why are we doing this?

  3. Novell changed from supporting Windows to supporting LINUX.

  4. What is Active Directory? A Windows-based server system housed at the GEC. (District office!)

  5. This involves every PC in the school. Not just teachers, or new ones. Laptops too. EVERY PC.Secretaries, custodial, cafeteria…

  6. What advantages will I see?

  7. Advantages • Faster start up • More Storage Space • My Documents copied to server • Same Log-in at other GSD sites • Automatic Windows & Virus updates….

  8. Advantages • Access “My Documents” from home using the portal. • Helpdesk can remotely help on your computer. • Faster Logins (after 1st login)

  9. What disadvantages are there?

  10. Disadvantages • Screensaver can’t change • Homepage is GSD, but teacher can change it. • On non-lab computers (ex - student classroom computers)Each student will need to install a printer the 1st time they login to a computer.

  11. Will staff Login USERNAME or PASSWORD change? No. Not yet! But the log in screen looks different. GRANITESCHOOLS I do not know when!

  12. Username = email name Password = email password Old one! New one! Works the same with Some minor “improvements”

  13. Will Student log-ins change? Yes! Username= ID number 1st time Password is Gr@niteLN.... (case sensitive!) They will be forced to change it…

  14. New passwords must have 3 of the following 4 rules: • 1 UPPER CASE • 1 small case • 1 numb3r • 1 special character!@#$ and be at least 7 characters.

  15. Will Student log-ins change? Yes! This will be done at the start of NEXT year. FOR STUDENTS ONLY!

  16. Will we be able to share files on the server like we did in the common folder?

  17. You will have a Shared\staff and Shared\studentsfolder (This is Wilson’s. Ours will say Olympus!) It is very similar Notice the “M: Drive”. It really is not a big deal! Shared is S:

  18. Will the icons that had red arrows still be placed on my Desktop? No. Zen-delivered Applications go with Novell. The new application launcher is called…

  20. To get to it click… Start, All Programs, LANDesk Management, LANDesk LaunchPad

  21. When? After CRT testing - May 20 and 21 for teacher/staff/employee machines only!

  22. When? Staff machines have to get “migrated” WHILE YOU ARE HERE!

  23. Please assist themAt that time. In all there are 600 computers that need to be “touched” by hand. Patience for all is important!

  24. YOU WILL NOTbe able to use your machine during those two days. From 6 am Thursday – 4pm Friday.Mark your calendars!

  25. When? Student Machines & Labs? Good question!

  26. When? Problem is… Students WILL need a new log-in. To do it this close the end of the year is not good practice.

  27. When? As of right now student machines in classrooms and labs will get migrated…. Probably over the summer.

  29. What do staff need to do to prepare? Fill out the Yellow form I gave you and get it back to me!

  30. Default software installed on Teacher Machines? If you need additional software OR hardware installed on YOUR machine. You must let me know on the YELLOW form I gave you and get it back to me ASAP.

  31. Those yellow sheets will be given to the people who will be working on your machines. Their job is to make your new “Active Directory Machine” work just like your old one. They need to know what needs to be installed and they will be using those papers to do it. YOU MUST supply the CD (or .exe) for YOUR specific software.

  32. What do staff need to do to prepare? Clean-up your files! You only get 10 G. This is not an option. If you have more than this. Your machine will NO longer “work”.
