  1. “A Primer of Demographic Terms” #5 and 7, page 67

  2. #5, page 67 • a. Death Rate = (Deaths/Total population) x 1000 • Dependency load = [(pop under 15 + pop over 65)/Total pop] x 100 • Emigration rate = (Emigrants/Total pop) x 1000 • Immigration rate = (Immigrants/Total pop) x 1000 • Infant Mortality Rate = (Infant deaths/Total live births) x 1000 • Natural Increase Rate = [(Births – Deaths)/Total pop] x 100 • Net Migration Rate = [(Immigrants – Emigrants)/Total pop] x 1000 • Pop Growth Rate = [(Births – Deaths) + (Immigration – Emigration)/Total pop] x 100 • Pop Growth Rate = Natural Increase Rate + Net Migration Rate

  3. #7, page 67 • Population at end of the year • Starting population = 31 850 000 • Pop added: 1 038 000 babies born + 53 000 immigrants = 1 091 000 • Pop subtracted: 594 000 deaths (including 93 000 baby deaths) + 86 000 emigrants = 680 000 • Thus, pop at end of the years: 31 850 000 + 1 091 000 – 680 000 = • 32 261 000 • The birth rate • Births/Total pop x 1000 • Therefore, (1 038 000/31 850 000) x 1000 = • 32.59 per 1000 • The death rate • Deaths/Total pop x 1000 • Therefore, (594 000/31 850 000) x 1000 = • 18.65 per thousand

  4. The emigration rate • Emigration rate = (Emigrants/Total pop) x 1000 • Therefore, (86 000/31 850 000) x 1000 = • 2.70 per 1000 • The immigration rate • Immigration rate = (Immigrants/Total pop) x 1000 • Therefore, (53 000/31 850 000) x 1000 = • 1.66 per 1000 • The natural increase rate • Natural Increase Rate = [(Births – Deaths)/Total pop] x 100 • Therefore, (1 038 000 – 594 000/31 850 000) x 100 = • 1.39% (the equivalent of 13.9 per thousand)

  5. The net migration rate • Net Migration Rate = [(Immigrants – Emigrants)/Total pop] x 1000 • Therefore, (53 000 – 86 000)/31 850 000) x 1000 = • -1.04 per 1000 • The population growth rate • Pop Growth Rate = [(Births – Deaths) + (Immigration – Emigration)/Total pop] x 100 • Therefore, [(1 038 000 – 594 000) + (53 000 – 86 000) / 31 850 000] x 100 = • 1.29% (the equivalent of 12.9 per 1000) • The infant mortality rate • Infant Mortality Rate = (Infant deaths/Total live births) x 1000 • Therefore, (93 000/1 038 000) x 1000 = • 89.60 per 1000

  6. The total fertility rate • (Number of births/Number of women aged 15 to 45) x 30 • Therefore, 1 038 000/9 159 000) x 30 = • 3.4 children per woman
