  2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • To gain an understanding of the role of the mentor. • Positive and negative mentoring • Understanding the benefits of learning styles • Importance of communication.

Two definitions of mentoring • Mentoring involves a process whereby an experienced, highly regarded, empathic person guides another individual in the development and re-examination of their own ideas, learning and personal and professional development” (SCOPME, 1998) • “The mentor relationship is explicitly a personal one to one relationship. One in which two people relate to each other with the explicit purpose of the one assisting the other to learn” (Jarvis P and Gibson S, 1997)

  4. MENTORING ROLE • Mentoring role is by no means a simple one- it requires the development of a wide range of sometimes quite complex skills to enable the individual to carry out the role effectively.
