Walking Stories How can we determine the speed that Ron was traveling just by looking at the graph? • We can do this by calculating velocity. Velocity is: Where d represents distance t represents time • The ∆ means “Change in”So, ∆d means “change in distance” (also called displacement)and ∆t means “change in time”
Walking Stories What is the difference between velocity and speed? Velocity is a measure of the rate of change of displacement with respect to time. It can also indicate direction (by its sign). It is possible to have a negative velocity (What might this mean?)Speed describes how distance is changing for every unit of time. Speed does not indicate a direction. It does not make sense to have a negative speed.The units for speed and velocity are “distance units per unit of time”. In Ron’s case, it’s kilometres per hour (written km/h).
