  4. Palestinian Statehood • Palestinians want their statehood • Want control of own borders • Desire to raise an army and have independence • Israel thinks that an independent Palestine will endanger their national security

  5. Jerusalem • Has religious significance for both Jews and Muslims • Jerusalem was in joint control until Israel captured the east side in the 1967 war • Israel claims all of Jerusalem now and considers it their capital • Most nations do not recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

  6. Jewish Settlements • Over 500,000 Jews live in occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip • These Jewish settlers will not accept Palestinian authority • In 2006 Israel withdrew all its settlements from the city of Gaza • Jewish setters are still settling in the West Bank

  7. Security Barrier • Israel began constructing a wall in 2002 to stop unauthorized entry of Palestinians and terrorists • Wall makes movement of Palestinians across their settlements more difficult

  8. Palestinian Refugees • 2.5 million Palestinians live in the West Bank and Gaza Strip • 3 million Palestinians are scattered across the Arab world • Palestinian leaders argue that all Palestinians that had to flee during the 1967 war should be allowed to return to their homes

  9. Water Resources • Water is limited in supply in the region • Water resources aren’t allowed across borders • Water rights remain a huge obstacle to peace agreements

  10. Arab-Israeli Peace? • Early in 2010 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Middle East leaders in Egypt • The next day she went to Jerusalem to meet with Palestinian leaders • The United States now supports a two state solution

  11. Israeli and Palestinian Leaders • Left: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu • Right: Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas • Met in New York City in 2010 to discuss peace, no result
