  1. DENTAL INFECTIONS: TYPES DENTAL INFECTIONS: TYPES OF DENTAL INFECTIONS OF DENTAL INFECTIONS

  2. Oral infections are caused by bacteria and a large number of viruses. They can affect the various parts of the mouth like the teeth, gums, palate, tongue, lips and the insides of the cheeks and throat. Oral lesions (sores or damaged tissue) are common and are usually indicative of infections in other parts of the body. The most common infection in the world is the common cold after which is an oral infection – tooth decay. The good thing about oral infections, at least most of them is that they are not contagious because they are caused by bacteria that exists in everyone’s mouth. It is only herpangina and recurrent herpes labialis that spread through the fluids of the mouth and nose.

  3. The most common oral infection after tooth decay is what is known as canker sores or aphthous ulcers which are painful and occur on the inside of the mouth, on the tongue, inner cheeks and throat, on the gums and palate and inside the lips. These are not linked to any particular bacteria as such and usually occur in children and young adults. Their causes may be as varied as lacerations from braces or even stress or vitamin deficiencies. In case of the latter they are treated with supplements. The best treatment is usually a saline or potassium permanganate gargle and the avoidance of spicy food.

  4. Dental Caries or cavities also known as tooth decay is caused by the destruction of the hard enamel of a tooth leading to holes that are further susceptible to decay. These are caused by bacteria like streptococcus that cause sweet and starchy foods into acid that eats away at the tooth. Young children and teenagers are most susceptible to this problem. A person with a small cavity may not experience pain till the cavity reaches the middle part of the tooth which hold the blood vessels. Once this happens tooth sensitivity and tooth ache develop. This must be treated soon so as to prevent further deterioration.

  5. Gingivitis or inflammation and infection of the gums is caused by plaque that coat the teeth along the gum line. The bacteria cause the gums to get irritated and inflamed.  If such plaque build-up is not removed through flossing and brushing it can turn into a hard substance known as tartar which further irritates the gums. As described by patients on Dentzz review blog, this problem also needs to be diagnosed and treated early otherwise it will aggravate quickly.

  6. Herpangina is an infection of the inner mouth or the region close to the throat and the roof of the mouth.  It is caused by a virus and usually affects children.  It is time bound. Similar to this is herpes or what is called cold blisters. This also caused by a virus but can spread to others. Thrush or candidiasis is fungal growth in the mouth that can cause cracks in the lips and tongue and also white or yellow patches in the mouth.

  7. These are the most common oral infections. These can be prevented with proper oral care i.e regular brushing and flossing and also maintaining hand hygiene. Regular visit to a dentist can keep these infections at bay. Read Dentzz review to know more about the services we offer.
