This guide outlines a structured approach to providing feedback on student papers, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing comments based on the hierarchy of issues. Begin with global issues that address the foundational elements of writing, ensuring clarity and coherence. Focus on development, organization, and appropriateness while minimizing feedback on minor errors such as grammar and punctuation unless the essential structure is strong. Educate students to refine their papers before grading, emphasizing that feedback should lead to improved writing skills. For personalized support, visit the FHSS Writing Lab at BYU.
