The Propaganda of the Boston Massacre: A Critical Incident in American History

The Boston Massacre, which occurred on March 5, 1770, serves as a pivotal example of propaganda in the American colonial struggle against British rule. Paul Revere's infamous engraving exaggerated the events, depicting British soldiers firing upon a peaceful crowd. This portrayal influenced public perception and rallied support against perceived tyranny. While a jury found the soldiers not guilty, the incident showcased how information can be manipulated to further political causes. The Boston Massacre remains a key moment in understanding the power of propaganda in shaping historical narratives.

  3. Examples of Propaganda ….

  4. The Boston Massacre took place on March 5, 1770 when a lone British soldier standing guard had an argument with a colonist and struck him. Crispus Attucks a sailor is the best remembered casualty of the incident. Two other men died within a few days. Colonists called the shooting “The Boston Massacre.” Paul Revere created an elaborate print titled: The Bloody Massacre perpetuated in King Steet.” The soldiers and their officer were charged with murder. A Boston jury found them not guilty because they believed they acted in self defense.

  5. Two soldiers were convicted of killing people in the crowd by accident. These men were branded on the thumb and released. The Boston Massacre was a good example of how the colonists used propaganda to further their cause against British aggression. Paul Revere exaggerated the drawing of the Boston Massacre and created an engraving. His engraving showed the British soldiers lined up and firing shots into a “peaceful” crowd. The engraving had nothing to do with the truth, which was that six or seven British soldiers were being threatened by a mob in Boston.
