  2. Geography • Two tallest mountains are Mount Kenya and Mount Elgon. They are located in the Kenyan Rift Valley • The longest river in Kenya is the Nile at 4,132 miles • Diani Beach is the best beach for families to visit • The three largest cities are Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru

History • 600: Arabs settle over area • 700’s: Portuguese try to take the land but are pushed out by Swahili states • 1895: British East African Protectorate is formed • 1920: Protectorate becomes a crown colony of Kenya • 1944: Kenyan African Union (KAU) is formed to campaign independence for Africa • 1947: Jomo Kenyatta is leader of KAU • 1952: Mau Mau a secret guerilla group violently campaign against white settlers. Kenyatta is arrested • 1953: Kenyatta is charged with management of Mau Mau and is put in jail, KAU banned

More History • 1956: Mau Mau rebels taken down but after thousands of Africans killed • 1959: Kenyatta released from jail but under house arrest • 1960: Kenya African National Union (KANU) is formed by Tom Mboya and Oginga Odinga • Independence • 1961: Kenyatta freed and continues to be president of KANU • 1963: Gains independence on December 12, Kenyatta is prime minister • 1964: Republic of Kenya formed, Kenyatta president and Odinga is vice-president • 1969: Tom Mboya is assassinated, Odinga arrested KANU is only party to contest elections

Even More History • 1978: Kenyatta dies in his office • Daniel arap Moi succeeds Kenyatta as president and is president until 2002 • 1982: Kenay is officially declared a one-party state by the National Assembly, • 1990: death of Robert Ouko the foreign minister leads to more dissent against the government • 1991: KANU agrees to introduces a multi-party system • 1992: 2,000 people killed in tribal conflict in west half of country • 1998: Al-Qaeda operatives bomb US Embassy in Nairobi killing 224 people • 2005: clashes of land/water rights kill over 40 people • 2013: british government says it sincerely regrets torturing thousands of Kenyans during the suppression of Mau Mau in the 50’s

Culture • Hissing at someone is a normal way to gain a strangers attention • If asking questions avoid yes/no’s, answering anything negatively is impolite • When showing someone around its normal for them to hold your hand to show you • Left Hand Rule: the left hand there is left for unhygienic acts and the right for eating and touching • Never point your finger unless looking for a fight, pointing there is the same as flipping someone off here • For women the way they act is watched even more close than men, loose, long hair is seen as provocative especially if blonde, and the head shoulders and legs are sensitive areas and need to be kept covered.

Government • Is a presidential representative democratic republic • President is head of state and government • President is Uhuru Kenyatta since 2013 • Executive branch is headed by president • Legislative branch is strictly parliament • Judiciary is independent from the legislative and executive
