INSPIRE - GMES Complementarity • GMES needs Spatial Infrastructure • Contribution to INSPIRE included in GMES 9th Thematic Priority • GMES studies to build upon INSPIRE results • Targets end 2003 consistent: • INSPIRE to produce draft legislation • GMES to produce detailed programme • By 2008 the European capacity for Global Monitoring of Environment and Security to include and rely upon European Spatial Data Infrastructure

EU Research Past programmes (FP4 and FP5) addressed Environmental and Geographic information INFSO - GI 2000: 32 projects demonstrated the potential as well as the shortcomings of GI (more political than technical) Environment: GIS were developed to run RTD projects in various areas (e.g. estuarine circulation; coastal zones management; floods; water ressources)

  14. EU Research: FP6 outlook • New RTD Programme includes 7 thematic priorities, 3 of which include aspects of relevance to Environment and Geographic Information: • 2. Information Society Technologies (GI and demonstration aspects) • 4. Aeronautics and Space (GMES) • 6.Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems (Observing and Forecasting Systems)
