Objectives • Identify purpose of overhaul • Describe initial overhaul procedures • Explain when initial overhaul begins • Explain what is included in initial overhaul • Explain procedures for small fires (incipient) • Explain procedures for large fires (freeburning or structural involvement) • Identify overhaul tools and equipment

  3. Overhaul • Extinguish hidden fires • Render property safe for firefighters and investigators • Return the property to a condition that may be entered or used by the occupants

  4. Initial Procedures • Directed at making scene safe for investigators • Begins when the main body of fire is extinguished • Opening of attic spaces • Cooling involved materials • Preserving evidence • Ventilating Building

  5. Initial Overhaul • Halt operations to preserve scene for fire investigators

  6. Small Fires • Remove affected items • Wet down involved items • Check room of origin with TIC • Check attic space with TIC • Remove drywall as necessary

  7. Large FiresFree burning or Structural Involvement • All contents shall be removed from fire rooms • Wet down affect items • Remove all wall coverings (drywall, paneling, etc.) • Remove all insulation • Remove all ductwork in fire room • Baseboards, moldings, door or window casings shall be removed

  8. Large Fires cont • Scrape floors clean • Remove carpet if necessary • Wet down entire area with Class A foam • Check entire area with TIC

  9. Safety • All members shall wear full PPE.

  10. Overhaul tools and equipment • Ventilation fans • Pike poles/NY hooks • Plaster hooks • TIC (Thermal imaging camera) • Axes • Rubbish Hooks • Saws (chainsaws, K1250)

  11. Summary • Determine severity of fire damage • Large or small fire • Thorough and consistent procedures reduce rekindles • Think Safety • Proper Tools and Equipment
