What makes a book a children’s book? • A child protagonist • An issue that concerns children • Developmentally appropriate plot • Younger children: linear (events mostly related in chronological order), limited time period, single narrator (point of view) • Older children: More complex plots, may have flashbacks and vary point of view • Use of vivid, concrete language

  3. How many children’s books are there? • 5000 new children’s book titles are published annually • More than 50,000 English-language children’s titles are in print • Tradition of publishing books for English-speaking children for 250 years
