  1. Investigative Reporting Continued Comm2315.wordpress.com

  2. What you can ask for • Review of Public Records – jail records, property records, marriage records, death records, birth records, and autopsy reports are all public information. • Court rulings and lawsuits are also public records. • Former employer information can be FOIA’d.

  3. How is this information helpful? • Gives you an idea for your story and the people you may or may not write about. • Let’s you know if the story is worth chasing. • If people aren’t willing to go on the record – these are records you can quote from.

  4. In Class Exercise • Break up in teams of two. • Exercise: You are reporters for the New York Times and you have heard about the El Paso Independent School District Cheating scandal. Rumor has it that it’s worse than Atlanta’s. • I am the source of information – Think of me as all of the EPISD board members, EPISD spokesperson and lawyer, and as the students affected by this tragedy. • YOU – need to come up to me and ask me for records and information. Get as much as you can in 20 minutes. • Next – Write up a short story with the information you have.

  5. Assignments • Do the online readings if you haven’t done so yet. • AP STYLE Quiz on Thursday – Names, states, and cities. • List is online for review.
