    3. The Four Goals of Progressivism 1. Protecting Social Welfare 2. Promoting Moral Improvement 3. Creating Economic Reform 4. Fostering Efficiency

    4. 1. Protecting Social Welfare Reformers worked to soften some of the harsh conditions of industrialization Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) built libraries, pools, etc. Salvation Army fed poor in soup kitchens Florence Kelley advocate for improving the lives of women and children

    5. 2. Promoting Moral Improvement These reformers felt that improving morality was the key, not the workplace Prohibition Womans Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) Met with resistance

    6. 3. Creating Economic Reform Panic and Depression brings capitalism under question Eugene V. Debs leads the Socialists Muckrakers

    7. 4. Fostering Efficiency Progressive leaders put their faith in experts and scientific principles to make society and the workplace more efficient Court cases Efficiency targets not only business but the government as well

    8. Cleaning up the Government Government had become very corrupt Political bosses reward supporters and openly buy votes A desire to increase efficiency leads to the desire to clean up the government Includes the local (Galveston and Dayton), State (Wisc. / La Follette), Elections (secret ballot, recall, initiative, referendum)

    9. La Follette (Wisconsin) He wanted to treat corporations the same, and wanted to drive them out of politics He taxed railroad property at the same rate as other business property Set up a commission to regulate rates Forbade railroads from issuing free tickets to government officials

    10. Children Number of children working had risen Immigrants and rural migrants often sent their children to work because they needed the money Children were more prone to accidents caused by fatigue
