  2. Children’s Day • May 5th is a national holiday that celebrates children. • Carp are a type of fish that is very popular and many families will have a pool in their yard to keep them. • Carp banners are purchase by the family and friends on the first festival after their birth and are flown every year afterward on the day. • They do not fly free like a kite on a string, but more like a wind sock.

  3. Today’s Project • Make a paper fish kite • Cut out fish shape • Paint the scales • Open mouth with pipe cleaner so we can hang it up

  4. Step 1 – Fish shape • Draw a fish shape outline on your large sheet of paper • It should fill the whole space • Put a second paper underneath and staple around the edge INSIDE the line • Cut out the shape

  5. Step 2 – Scales • Use the paint to make a pattern of scales • You can use • warm colors: red, orange, yellow, pink OR • Cool colors: blue purple, green, gray • You can make scalloped scales or stripes

  6. Step 3 – Pipe cleaner • Loop the pipe cleaner into a circle and twist the ends so that it is secure • Check the size on the mouth of your fish • Take a second pipe cleaner and make a handle for the circle • Put the circle in the mouth of the fish • The handle should be sticking out of the mouth • Fold over the paper and staple it down
