  1. In your notebook… • What is an example of a time in your life you avoided something or someone because you were afraid? • Think about a story or movie in which the main character must face something or someone dangerous. What happens as a result of the confrontation?

  2. Addie says “Hi!” and get your notebook and get a book and open up to page 4…

  3. Vocabulary for the story: • Intermittently, adv.: periodically. • Obstinately, adv,: stubbornly. • Expedient, n.: means; resource. • Dissuaded, v.: advised against. • Inexorable, adj.: unyielding, relentless. • Intrepid, adj.: fearless

  4. Turn to page 4 and read silently. Then prepare to listen carefully to the story. While listening, record what you see as the conflict in the story, the climax, and the resolution. “The Colomber” By Dino Buzzati

  5. Discussion • Do you think the Colomber shark really existed? Evidence for/against.

  6. Plot • Summarize the plot of the story based on the notes you took while listening. Make sure you point out the conflict, the climax, and the resolution. In your groups, share your responses.

  7. Conflict • Which form of conflict was Stefano experiencing? • If the Colomber was real, Man vs. Nature. • If the Colomber was fake, man vs. self.

  8. “The Edge” • Can be physical or psychological. • Is Stephano’s experience a physical encounter with “the edge” or a psychological experience? (answer in your notebook)

  9. Honors: For homework • Respond to #7 on pg 13.
