Standards of Assessment Materials for Young Children • Authenticity: Does the assessment focus on actual child behavior in real settings? • Convergence: Does the assessment rely on more than one source of information? • Collaboration: Does the assessment involve cooperation and sharing, especially with parents?

  3. Continued… • Equity: Does the assessment accommodate special sensory, motor, cultural or other needs rather than penalize children who have such needs? • Sensitivity: Does the assessment include sufficient items for planning lessons and directing changes?

  4. Continued… • Congruence: Was the assessment developed and field tested with children similar to those being assessed?

  5. Assessment and Evaluation Stages • Case finding/child find. • Screening. • Assessment for diagnosis and determination of eligibility. • Program planning. • Program evaluation.

  6. Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) • Mandated by federal law. • Based on the premise that a child’s home environment strongly influences the child’s overall experiences and successes.

  7. Components of an IFSP • Present level of cognitive development. • Statement of families resources, priorities and concerns. • Outcomes, criteria and procedures used to determine progress. • Specific early intervention services, including frequency and delivery.

  8. Continued… • A statement of natural environments and a justification for services not being provided in that environment. • Dates for initiation and duration of services. • Identification of service coordinator. • Steps to be taken to support transition of the toddler to preschool.
