Egyptian Civilization • Polytheistic – pharaoh closely linked to Amon-Re (chief god, sun god); most Egyptians related to Osiris & Isis whose stories touched human emotions • Believed in afterlife  mummification RELIGION • Class hierarchy: top = pharaoh & ruling family; next = priests, next = nobles; next = merchants, artisans and scribes; bottom = peasant farmers (majority of Egyptians) • Women enjoyed relatively high status and independence • Some social mobility during New Kingdom SOCIETY • Writing: hieroglyphics for important records; translated after discovery of the Rosetta Stone; demotic & papyrus for everyday use. • Practical geometry developed to redraw field boundaries • Mummification  medical knowledge • Astronomy  calendar LEARNING ART & LIT. • Reveals Egyptian attitudes and values • Tale of Sinuheshows us how Egyptians viewed themselves and the people of the surrounding desert.
