  6. Day 1-Media & Arts • McKinley Middle Magnet Opening Ceremony • Performance by the Delta Blues Man Diversity Through Education

  7. Day 1- Media & Arts • Visit to Ford Sound Design Studio • Students decided to write & produce an informative 30 second commercial for the TAL program Diversity Through Education

  8. Day 2- Education • Children’s Charter School • Southern University • School Board Office • LSU Diversity Through Education

  9. Day 3- Health Care Day • Blue Cross Luncheon Learned about LACHIP healthcare programs • Oschner Medical Center Toured facilities and spoken to by Eric McMillen Diversity Through Education

  10. Day 4- Gov. & Crim. Justice • Governmental Scavenger Hunt downtown • Met Tax Assessor/District Court Judges • Juvenile Detention Center Tour • Juvenile Court Diversity Through Education

  11. Day 5- Reality Check • Traveled by bus to get services (public healthcare/housing) • Dined at St. Vincent De Paul’s dining hall • Visited BRCC/Social Services Dept. Diversity Through Education

  12. Day 6-Tech. & Finances • Visited the LASM Diversity Through Education

  13. Day 6- Continued • Visited LA TECH Park (Doug Lee) • Visited Campus Federal (Blaine Grims: Money Matters) Diversity Through Education

  14. Service Project • Our Objectives: • To inform the community of a lack of access to public services • To get citizens of Baton Rouge behind public transportation improvements • To put the voice of inner city baton rouge into the mainstream media How does public transportation effect our community?

  15. What are we going to do? • Film/produce a video highlighting the CATS system in relation to public services in Baton Rouge • Thursday 7/27/06 • Visits to EBRP School Board, Public Housing Dept, Social Services Dept.

  18. Economic Development • Efficient and inexpensive transportation are the keys to: • Social services • If people do not have reliable transportation, they cannot be a positive role in our local economy • Access to education and jobs

  19. The effects on healthcare • More people going to community centers and hospitals in early stages of illnesses translates to MORE MONEY, right? • WRONG: in the long run, money will be saved because it is cheaper to treat a person before they get worse or spread their illness

  20. FACTS • CATS is budgeted only 2.1 million dollars • Dayton, Ohio budgets 35 million (population of 166,179)
