  1. Slope GRE 403: Exhibit knowledge of slope

  2. What is Slope? ◊Slope is the steepness of a line. ◊A higher slope value indicates a steeper incline. (Moving towards vertical) ◊The variable ‘m’ is the symbol for slope.

  3. What is Slope? ◊Slope is the change in the vertical distance over the change in the horizontal distance. ◊In other words, rise over run.

  4. What is Slope? ◊Positive Slope – A line moving upwards from left to right indicates a positive slope.

  5. What is Slope? ◊Negative Slope – A line moving downwards from left to right indicates a negative slope.

  6. What is Slope? ◊No Slope – A horizontal line has NO slope.

  7. What is Slope? ◊Undefined Slope – A vertical line has a slope that is undefined.

  8. Finding Slope ◊To find slope we must identify two points on the line. (4, 7) (1, 2)

  9. Finding Slope ◊Next, we draw a triangle from those two points. .. ..

  10. Finding Slope ◊Finally, we find the rise over the run. .. m = 5/3 The line is moving upwards from left to right, so the slope is positive. Rise = 5 .. Run = 3 Leave it as a fraction. Reduce if you can.

  11. Finding Slope ◊Let’s find the slope of this line. • 1.Is the slope positive or negative? • Negative • 2. What is the rise? • 8 • 3. What is the run? • 6 • So, m = –8/6 or • m = –4/3 Run = 6 .. Rise = 8 ..

  12. Let’s try one… • Find the slope of the line that goes through the points (4, 2) and (-5, -4). Positive Slope! Rise = 6 m = 6/9 or m = 2/3 . . Run = 9
