CASEMission Statement CASE is dedicated to ensuring that future high school and EC-12 teachers are able to successfully complete the process of becoming certified teachers and are highly-qualified to educate their students. CASE will also actively engage faculty from the Colleges of Liberal Arts, Science, and Health Sciences in the teacher preparation program.

  9. Salary The U.S. Dept. of Labor: Bureau of Labor & Statistics (2008) reports the following salaries earned by educators:

El Paso ISD – Fall- 2009 Starting salary: $43,000.00 (0 years experience) Add $1,000.00 for a Masters Signing bonus for math and science: $6,000.00 (for traditionally certified teachers) Annual stipend  for math and science - $2,500.00 There is a stipend for teaching up to 5 classes of ESL in EPISD.  So if you teach all 5 classes, you will receive an $1,100.00 stipend.   11. ESL Supplemental Three additional courses will allow you to get an ESL endorsement: Ling 4348 Analysis of Second language acquisition Ling 3308 Structure of language for language professionals Bed 4317 Teaching and empowering english language learners in secondary schools

  12. Dr. Georgia Lane EPISD’s Director of Secondary Personnel and Recruiting Social Studies, PE and Language Arts are usually very competitive content areas because there are so many candidates. Shortage areas - Math, Science, French

UTEP Career Fairs There are three job fairs at UTEP every year College of Education has one each semester and consists of the districts in the El Paso region University Career Services and the sponsors of Job Mine hosts a Career Fair every April in the Don Haskins In the spring of 2009, sixty two school districts from around the state and nation participated.

  15. “I Want to Coach” Option I: Major: Kinesiology/College of Health Sciences Minor: EC-12 Education Eligible for: Coaching/Teaching Kinesiology ONLY Option II: Major: Subject Area (i.e. History, English) Minor: Secondary Education Eligible for: Teaching that subject area AND coaching a sport

  16. High School and EC-12 Education Classes: The following education courses may be taken prior to admission into the Teacher Education Program. SCED 3311 –Curriculum Planning in the Secondary School this should be taken before the Internship Semester. Requires 30 observation hours. *Music students see advisor. RED 3342 –Reading and Study in the Content Area. Content Methods Course –Methods courses vary by discipline. Please refer to your degree plan for your specific teaching methods course. The following courses require admission to Teacher Education: EDPC 3300 –Developmental Variations SCED 3317 –Multicultural Education (Taken during student teaching semester in conjunction with SCED 4691) SCED 4691/ TED 4696/ 4697/ 4698/ 4699 –Student Teaching 5 full days per week- Monday thru Friday 8-4 p.m. 15 weeks How will you support yourself/family for that semester? PLAN NOW!

  17. Teacher Education Admission Requirements: English 1311, 1312 and Communication 1301/1302 with grades of “C” or better in each course. Math 1319 or higher level math with a grade of “C” or better. (Math requirement varies by degree plan.) The Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) or Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) with passing scores on math (230), writing (220), and reading (230). Completion of 60 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.50 or better.

To become a high school or EC-12 certified teacher in the state of Texas you must: • Take and pass UTEP Content and PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility) Qualifying exams • Take and pass Content and PPR TExES certification exams • Graduate from an accredited college • Register and pay for your teaching license • Pass a background check (you must also pass one to participate in your mandatory field observations and student teaching)

  19. When do I prepare for my UTEP qualifying exams and my state (TExES) certification exams? You learn most of the material covered in your content exam in your freshman and sophomore level classes. Start thinking about your exams as soon as you have completed 60 credit hours towards your degree.
