  4. #ThinkLikeAScientist Good Writing Involves Scientific Thinking Good writing involves good thinking, and good thinking involves inquiry and reflection—METACOGNITION. Good writing also involves practice and experimentation. Good writing requires vulnerability and confidence through trial and error to find what works best. In many ways, writers need to:

  5. Albert Einstein Albert Einstein was a scientist, but he was also a WRITER. Einstein published many papers, and in 1904, at the age of 25, he was often seen wheeling a baby carriage and stopping every so often to write down ideas in a notebook. In the carriage was his infant son, also named Albert, and the ideas written in the notebook would be some of the most influential in history (New York Times, 2010).

Einstein was a good writer because… He was a good reader who utilized critical thinking by questioning while he read and practicing metacognition through the reading, thinking, and writing process. The thinking practices that Einstein and other scientists and researchers use can be learned to help students become better writers.

  7. High school and college students have areas of need that can be addressed by #ThinkingLikeAScientist.   8. To strengthen writing, students need to be able to: Ask questions & form hypotheses while reading, be resourceful,experiment, persevere through trial & error, & reflect on theirprocess and decisions

  9. Activity How can we create a classroom environment in which students can become more independent writers who feel safe and willing to take risks to reveal their best writing? Provide answers to this question by collaborating in a multi-grade level team to form hypotheses regarding how to create an environment of inquiry and risk-taking. Starter: There will be a positive relationship between the environment and students’ writing achievement if students are able to….or if teachers….

Students will create an original research question and interview to investigate a topic. Students will develop a written argument based on the integration of multiple, diverse media formats that varies syntax for rhetorical effect. • Students practicing skills in CCSS, but have freedom to select sources, select topic, and develop own questions

  15. Activity 2 Step 1: With your multi-grade level team, go to the lab station that matches the color of the beaker at a lab to the color specified on your post-it. Step 2: At your team’s lab station, you will find a test tube with a writing CCSS inside. Step 3: Develop a writing prompt or activity that is aligned to that CCSS after selecting a grade level of your team’s choice
