  3. What is an Extremophile? • An extremophile is an organism that thrives under "extreme" conditions. • They are prokaryotes in the kingdom Archaea.

  4. Terms Used to Describe Extremophiles • suffix –phile, meaning "lover of," • prefix specific to their environment • For example, acidophiles are organisms that love (phile) acid (acido).

  5. Halophiles- these microbes live in salty environments (dried lake-beds and salt-flats)  Halophiles

  6. Thermophiles Live in hot springs that reach temperatures of 80º C (177ºF)

  7. Archaebacteria The orange scum is archaeabacteria found in Rotorua, New Zealand The rusty color on the rocks of this volcanic pool lives near mount Vesuvius in Italy.

  8. Black smokers (above) can produce temperatures of 350 C (662 F), but archaean microbes are still able to thrive here

  9. Cyanobacteria • blue-green algae, blue-green bacteria or Cyanophyta • is a phylum of bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. • Cyanobacteria is important to the marine nitrogen cycle • Cyanobacteria is an important primary producer in the ocean
