  3. The Great Famine (1313-1322) • Lots of rain= floods • crops spoiled • livestock drowned • Farm animals killed for food • Grain shortage • high price of grain (6x) • Asked church WHY??

  4. The Black Death (1347-1351) The Black Death (bubonic plague)- 25 yrs after Great Famine Flee infested rats came on ships from Asia 25 million people died, 1/3 of Europe’s population

  6. The Black Death • Blamed Jews • poisoned the water • God’s Punishment • Created a labor shortage. • serfs began demanding money for work

  7. The Hundred Years War (1337-1453) • England vs. France • no heir for France • English king claimed throne • Strengthened royal power in both countries • No knights, now ARMIES • New weapons • long bow • cannons

  8. The Hundred Years War • Joan of Arc • led French army • drove English out of France • helped crown new King • captured by English and burned at the stake

  9. The Great Schism (1378-1417) • Pope clashed with non-religious rulers • kings wanted to appoint bishops • try priests in court, and • tax Church lands. • Pope resisted • 1305, French Pope elected • Moved papacy from Rome to Avignon, France

  10. The Great Schism • Church now had French influence • 1378, pope moved back to Rome • French said no, elected new pope • 2 popes (Rome, France) • Schism (split) weakened Church’s authority

  11. The Great Schism 1409, 3rd pope elected 1417, all 3 popes kicked out & a new pope was elected Church’s prestige was greatly weakened
