  1. Year-End Auction How to leave 8th grade with more than just good grades

  2. What is this about? • What is one of the main purposes of school? • What is one of the things that comes with (most) jobs? • Since you will not be getting “grades” in your career but will instead get things that make your life better (primarily an income) why not give you the opportunity to earn things that will make YOUR life better – probably not grades!

  3. How will this work? • During this WHOLE year in SS, you have the opportunity to earn points. • How can I earn these points? • Simple – at the end of each quarter, you will get a “deposit” of the number of points in your grade percentage. So, for example, a student who earned a 95% in the class would get 95 points deposited and a student who earned a 75% would get 75 points deposited. See where this is going?

  4. Are grades the only way I can earn points? • No – there are several other ways you can earn points, but these other ways are all OPTIONAL. They are: • Mystery Music Machine (2-20 points) • Impossible Question (5 -10 points) • What and Where in the World (5-10 points) • CEFL Player of the Week (5 points) • Participation in Saturday Service trips with follow-up essay (25 points) • Class participation (1 point for each contribution) • Assorted classroom competitions and activities (varies)

  5. What will happen then? • The auction will be held at the END of the school year, so this is about long-term thinking. • At the end of the year, I will post a list of items that are available. These items will have been donated from local companies that want to support this program of rewarding students for success in school.

  6. Who will get the items? • As with any auction, the item goes to the highest bidder. Therefore, those students with more points will likely get the things they want. You will also be bidding against students in my other social studies classes and there will not be enough items for everyone to get something – only those with the most points!

  7. What kind of things will be in the auction? • Since this will be my first time doing this in the Philippines, I don’t know, but in previous auctions in other places there have been: * Movie Tickets * Sporting tickets * Skateboards * DVDs * Snowboards * Theme Park tickets * iPods * Concert tickets * Restaurant gift cards * limo rides • Clothing store gift cards * Mr. Hamlin’s autographed photo (worth millions of dollars!)

  8. What should my strategy be? • If you hope to get something in the year-end auction, the most important thing is to get good grades. Grade points will be the largest chunk of your “earnings.” • The top point earners usually have good grades AND do some of the optional things related to the class that were mentioned earlier.

  9. Can points be deducted? • Of course – just like in the real world where there are traffic tickets, fines for paying your credit card bill late, and penalties for showing up late to work – there are deductions. • Strikes – for every strike you receive this year, there is a 5 point penalty. This isn’t a lot, but if you get MANY strikes, these could amount to quite a bit. • Late work – again, 5 point penalty for each late assignment this year. Again, one or two won’t hurt much, but if you are regularly late with work, you might as well not even hope to get any auction items.

  10. Final Warning: Don’t be THAT student come the end of May! • Who is THAT student? • THAT student would be one who chooses not to work very hard all year, doesn’t attempt to earn any bonus points, and then sees something really cool at the end of the year that they want – only to find out they have far fewer points than other students. • THAT student usually is very disappointed and regrets not having earned more points during the year and ends up asking me if there is anything they can do to earn more points, but the answer is NO. • THAT student mistakenly believes by doing well in 4th quarter, they can somehow gain a whole bunch of points in time for the auction. • THAT student doesn’t realize that earning a high number of points is going to take commitment all year – this is like a marathon, not a sprint – we have a LONG way until the auction comes around in May.
