  1. Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources Management Collaborative Research Support Program SANREM CRSP Long-Term Research Project: Watershed-based Natural Resource Management in Small-scale Agriculture: Sloped Areas of the Andean Region Sub-watershed “Jatun Mayu” river Tiraque - Bolivia June, 2007

  2. ¿Why the Andean Region? Project Objectives • Create options for more effective management and sustainable use of resources in livelihood activities. • Identify, evaluate, introduce and promote sustainable natural resources-based alternatives for livelihood strategies. • Social capital construction, increase the local governability and contribute to economic and social stability in far away rural zones with degraded resources. The project is executed in the Andean Zone of Ecuador (Bolivar Province) and Bolivia (Tiraque Province – Cochabamba)

  3. Project Partners in Bolivia PROINPA Foundation Promotion and Research of Andean Products PROMIC Program of Integral Watershed Management CERES Studies Center of Economical and Social Reality UMSS  Universidad Mayor de San Simón • Program of Genetics and Biodiversity • Hydraulic Laboratory

  4. Sub-watershed Location Department of Cochabamba Sub-watershed “Jatun Mayu” river

  5. Sub-watershed of “Jatun Mayu” river

  6. The Sub-watershed Social Organization AGRARIAN CENTRAL PEASANT Sub-Central PEASANT COMMUNITY (Agrarian Syndicate) Main Organization

  7. The Sub-watershed

  8. Bio-regulators evaluation for high quality potato production Assay under a design of randomized blocks with 5 treatments and 4 replications. Livelihood Alternatives Validation and Diffusion of Integrated Crop Management (ICM) Technologies in middle and upper sub-watershed zones POTATO • Comparison among ICM technology offer and farmer’s traditional technology • Setting of costs production and economical analyses

  9. Livelihood Alternatives Validation and Diffusion of Integrated Crop Management (ICM) Technologies in middle and upper sub-watershed zones FABA BEANS • Comparison among ICM technology offer and farmer’s traditional technology • Setting of costs production and economical analyses • Evaluation assay of 3 faba beans varieties (Randomized blocks with 3 replications). • Variety “Gigante Copacabana” with good outcomes of adaptability in lower and middle sub-watershed zones. FORAGE PRODUCTION • Participatory appraisal in associated forage production: Oat + Vicia dacycarpa and Barley + Vicia dacycarpa in lower sub-watershed zone.

  10. Livelihood Alternatives Strawberry seedling production in lower and middle Sub-watershed zones and Market Poll Studies • Implantation of strawberry seedling production demonstrative plots using Soil Conservation practices in sloped places. • Develop of a Crop Management protocol and quality control • Market Poll in production potential zones.

  11. Livelihood Alternatives Crop Rotation Systems in Higher Sub-watershed zones. • Assay of five crop adaptation in upper sub-watershed zone (8 plots with 5 crops in two different zones). • Participatory appraisal of whole productive cycle activities of five crops. • Identification of MACA (Lepidium meyinii) like the best adaptation crop to the upper zone climate conditions. • Processing and market search for the new alternative in a participatory way with farmers.

  12. Market access studies Production costs of main crops. Prices fluctuation in local markets. • Production costs determination of main crop of the zone (potato, faba beans and cereals). • Economic analyze, costs and profitability of the identified and tested alternatives in the present campaign. • Permanent monitoring of prices fluctuation on main crops in four local markets: Tiraque, Punata, Colomi & El Puente.

  13. Topographic Map Geologic Map Current Land Using Map Slopes Map Natural Resource Management Development of Erosion and Degradation Risk Map From Land sat image with resolution of 15 m.

  14. Natural Resource Management Erosion and degradation risk map and identification of case study areas. Case Studies: Deep research to measure the effects of current livelihoods (potato, faba beans and forage) and the livelihood alternatives (Strawberry, pastures, etc.) in household economy and the environment.

  15. Natural Resource Management Soil Studies, Soil conservation and data collection to watershed modeling • Soil analysis and fertility in parcels of Case Study Areas. • Erosion soil lost monitoring and runoff in parcels of Case Study Areas.

  16. Community Land Regulation Plan (POP-COM) – Case study (Community of Cebada Jich’ana) • Two communal workshops to make talking maps and socioeconomic diagnostic. • Land units raising and development of maps based on IKONOS image with high resolution (1 m) Farmers training (IPM Potato pests: Tuber moth & Andean potato weevil and safety use of pesticides) • Six training workshop in three communities. • Participation of male and female farmers. Watershed participatory planning
