  2. Moon Valley High School • Approximately 1500 students • Urban School in the Glendale Union HS Dist. • Title I School • 58% represented by ethnic minorities • 67 % in free & reduced lunch program • 14 CTE programs offered • Over 50% take a CTE course yearly

School Achievements • Excelling 2006-2012 • “A”-rated 2011-2013 • Ranked top in the state for growth points among all AZ public high schools for two of last three years • ABEC/ACT Higher Performing School 2012 Award recipient for All Academic Preparedness • US News and World Report 2008-2014 • ADE “Spotlight on Success” in 2010

  8. Why focus on CTE? • Competitive world market • Service-oriented society • One of five critical identifiers in preparing students for post-secondary education • Life skills applied to all jobs • Increases interest in core classes

  10. Building a Successful School cont. • All means All • Teachers make the difference • Teamwork – PLC’s, SLC’s, vertical, horizontal • Build buy-in • Campus culture – academics drives each decision • SMART goals measured throughout the year

Action Plan Begins Freshmen Year Review the Action Plan – what stands out to you as essentials in preparing students? • Every teacher has to sell higher education • Counselors’ Role – 6-year plans replace 4-year plans • CTE teachers need to be counselors – the impact of elective teachers • Impact of grades freshmen and sophomore year

  12. Career Mapping • Began by looking at Career Clusters • Mapped out courses over 6 years for every career • What courses does every career require? • How well is this being communicated to students and parents? • How well do the teachers know this?

  13. Shared Instructional Practices • Student centered • Cooperative learning • Text based instruction • Literacy strategies • Digital literacy • Performance based assessments

How Directors Support Schools So what do schools need that you can provide? • Training in EEI and instructional practices • Sharing of best practices • A roadmap model of every career for teachers, counselors, and administrators • Performance assessments that include literacy elements • “Hook the Principal” – CTE can support the core classes
