  2. Introduction • 4 main sites (Acton, Ealing Green, Southall and Barons Court) • Outreach centre at Greenford • Ca 18,000 students • 12,000 part-time • 6,000 full-time • 12,500 adults • Centre for Excellence in Construction and Media

  3. Qualification Matrix • Pre-entry/Level 1qualifications for those without formal qualifications • Level 2 – GCSE, core vocational qualifications • Level 3 – A2/AS, advanced vocational qualifications

  4. Students from Ealing • 5,600 students from Ealing wards • 1,600 16-18 • 4,000 adults • Ca 2,100 unemployed students (Detailed figures re: adults in the information pack)

Young People • E2E programmes (combination of basic and vocational skills) – 61 in West London • Princes Trust (basic skills and project based) – based in Acton, Southall and QPR – 8 teams per annum • ESF contract to support students who are “NEET” (40 students, 11 in LBE) These programmes lead to employment (apprenticeships) or higher level programmes • Apprenticeships (mainly construction)

ESOL/Literacy and Numeracy • Courses at all levels Pre-entry to level 2 on all three Ealing sites • Pre-entry (no knowledge) through to Level 2 • Entry 2 – most basic level for employment • Entry 3 – ideal minimum level But • Level 1 is seen as the target level • Core funding for below Level 1 reducing • Higher demand for “lower level” programmes (especially at Southall and Acton)

  8. Vocational Programmes • 16-18 Programmes at Southall (Business, IT, Science, Travel and Tourism, Health Care) • Media at Ealing Green • Construction and Motor Vehicle at Acton • Hair and Beauty, Business, IT, Science, Travel and Tourism and Health Care at Hammersmith

Supported Learning • Courses focused on employment and employability (supported by our Employment Inclusion Manager) • Majority have work experience built in • Support to employers • Community Programmes in Ealing: • Carlton Road Day Centre • Cowgate Day Centre • Ealing Hospital (more details in information pack)

Train to Gain & Community Programmes • Train to Gain • Targeted at employees from SMEs • Mainly Level 2 (core vocational level) and ESOL • New Deal (170 in 2007/8) through Job Centre Plus • ESF (new contracts) • Skills for Jobs (Adults) • Flexible Learning Opportunities (young people) Using “Licence to Skill” (more details in information pack)

New Developments • Work Focused ESOL • Offender Learning and Skills Service (OLASS) • Employment plus programme for students with learning difficulties in paid employment (day release) • Job coaches for students with learning difficulties (pre employment and entering employment for the first time)

  12. Challenges • ESOL • Ideal solution for worklessness: • Vocational programme supported by • ESOL or literacy/numeracy But • Maximum hours to prevent loss of jobseekers’ allowance makes this difficult • Hard to reach communities • Core v Contestable
