Where does the water that we use come from? • Fresh water – lakes, rivers, streams, ground water • Most water on the planet is salt water. • The saline content makes it poisonous to plants and animals.
Where does the water that we drink come from? • Lakes • Rivers • Underground aquifers - area underground rock through which water can move.
Coagulation • Chemicals are added to water to remove dirt. • Dirt drops to the bottom
Sedimentation • Large particles drop to the bottom
Filtration • Water moves through filters like sand, gravel and charcoal to remove small particles
Disinfection • A small amount of Chlorine is added to the water to kill microorganisms.
Storage • Water is put in a closed tank or reservoir and runs through pipes to communities

Is water renewable or non renewable? • Water is a renewable resource (water cycle), but some areas have such a high need that water shortages can occur.
Potable Water • Potable water is water that is safe for human consumption. • In some parts of the world, people do not have water delivered to their home threw pipes. They must travel to get potable water.
Water supplies can become contaminated due to poor sanitation. • This can lead to life threatening diseases such as cholera.
