  1. MANLY VILLAGE PUBLIC SCHOOL ROYAL FAR WEST DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONNAIRE June 2013

  2. Overview 2 • Objective • Seek responses from Manly Village Public School Community to the proposed development by RFW following PAC approval of the Concept Plan in April 2013 • Provide a consolidated view of priorities, expectations and concerns raised by the parent community respondents • Backdrop - MVPS has 680 students. Official DEC models show it will reach 800. DEC stated that MVPS overcrowding is one of its top 3 priorities. • Results • 150 respondents to an online survey – a very large quantitative sample • Quantitative and qualitative responses along the following themes: • Unique opportunity to provide more space to the growing population of Manly Village Public school • Major concerns in relation to the disruption and danger a construction site this close to the school will cause • Permanent degradation of the school site following completion of the proposed project due to shade, increased traffic, privacy impact and other potential undesirable anti-social behavior

  3. Survey Results 3 • Key priorities* More open playground space & Additional classrooms Access to state-of-the art teaching facilities (e.g. audio-visual, auditoriums, computer labs etc.) Access to RFW special education remedial services (e.g. educational assessments, specialist reading programs etc.) * As indicated by 150 responses using on line survey during May / June 2013. 74%

  4. Survey Results 4 • Key messages* • “RFW care is wonderful but please ensure that any development takes into account the needs of the whole community” • “DECS land should be excluded from the proposed development and returned for use in expansion of the MVPSwhich has a far greater need for more space” • “Please keep development at same rise as it is now to avoid shading and preserve Manly's village atmosphere” • “care during construction to maintain highest standard of safety for MVPS students in terms of air dust, asbestos, noise, traffic • No need for more restaurants or hotel so close to the school • Playground that has got sunlight and privacy, one which is not overlooked by commercial development • Larger area for drop off and pickups * As indicated by 150 responses using on line survey during May / June 2013.

  5. So why are MVPS parent community results relevant at all ? 5 • MVPS presented a petition to the state government with 740 signatures which spoke against the RFW’s commercial development plans. • Ministers Piccoli & Baird have publicly stated NSW Government policy is that any transactions with RFW will only be considered if there is a significant benefit to MVPS. • DEC stated that no action would be taken without full parental consultation. • The school community therefore has the potential to exercise significant influence over the direction of the outcome through DEC and ministerial representation. • The DEC is obligated to meet the current and future accommodation and space requirements of MVPS, so how will it undertake to do this ?
