  2. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM LESSON • An elementary/middle school science lesson plan on the digestive system. • Suggested Grades: • 3rd Grade – 9th Grades

  3. Instructional Objectives • The student will: • Identify features of the human body, with a focus on the digestive system. • Explore the needs of the human body by explaining the importance of good health in relationship to the body. • Understand the functions of the human body and its organs.

  4. Materials • Roletags (to be hung around the neck) naming the body parts involved in the digestive tract including teeth, mouth, food, esophagus, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, and rectum (Can be more or less specific depending on the grade level) • Digestive system visual aid • Youtube videos – see list • Interactive websites like-http://kitses.com/animation/swfs/digestion.swf

  5. Instructional Strategies 1. Previous learning on the Digestive System 2. View video 3. Interactive website exploration 4. Discuss and define the roles for the digestive system. How each role should be acted out using the prior knowledge learned. Ie. How could we act out moving the food down the esophagus? What would the people role playing the esophagus need to do? 5. Hand out the roletags. Have each group of students determine their actions and prepare themselves. 6. Begin the role play with a narrator voicing over as the food moves through the system. 7. Switch roles and try again if time available. 8. Group discussion and reflection on the activity.

The teacher or selected student will provide the narration of the digestive system as it is dramatized including the following: • Food enters through the lips into the mouth • Your teeth grind up food into small pieces to be digested by the stomach • The tongue helps us swallow food • The food goes down the esophagus to the stomach after it has been swallowed • The stomach mixes up food • The stomach is kind of like a "holding tank" for food • The stomach turns the particles into liquid • In the intestines some of the liquid is absorbed into the body to be used for fuel. • The rest continues through the large and small intestines • It is expelled through the rectum as waste.

  7. Student Reflection • Students may blog their experiences and reflections upon completing the drama experience. • Students may create inquiry questions they may be interested in learning more about.

  8. Instructional Considerations • Classes usually include students possessing a variety of learning styles and ability levels. This lesson plan has been designed to accommodate kinesthetic and visual learners by incorporating active learning strategies and visual aids.
