  4. IPAM and SCVMM Where does IPAM integrate w/ SCVMM? The integration between IPAM and System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager provides end-to-end IP address space automation for Microsoft-powered cloud networks. IPAM integration with Virtual Machine Manager enables a single IPAM server to detect and prevent IP address space conflicts, duplicates, and overlaps across multiple instances of Virtual Machine Manager deployed in the large datacenter. With network virtualization deployed, the integration also provides a comprehensive view of IP address mapping of the service provider network and that of the tenant/customer address space (virtual network) in IPAM, so it can be centrally administered by the network administrator.

  5. Automatic Virtual Machine Activation Do System Center 2012 R2 license keys work w/ automatic activation? Automatic Virtual Machine Activation is a feature of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter running as a virtualization host. When you deploy guest operating systems that support AVMA (such as Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter/Essentials) in a VM, you use publicly available keys when prompted within the VM. System Center Virtual Machine Manager includes the ability to specify keys in an answer file. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303421.aspx

  6. SCVMM and Gen2 VMs Is there Gen2 VM support in SCVMM? Yes. Generation 2 VMs are supported in System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager.

  7. Online VM Export and Fix • What’s the best practice for exporting a live VM to debug (mentioned in Jeff Woolsey’s TechEd session) – how do you fix the export and then bring it online to replace broken VM? • Once you export the VM, you have a full live copy of the VM that can be used to debug the issue. Depending on the architecture of the application and the nature of the issue, there are a number of ways a customer can address the issue and reincorporate the fix from dev/test back into production. There is no “one size fits all” solution, and customers should choose the method that best meets their unique needs. For example: • If the application is a modern, stateless application, a customer could make the changes within the exported VM, verify the fix and import the VM back into the production workload. • If the application is a stateful application, the developer will likely develop a patch on the exported VM, verify the patch and apply the patch to the affected application in the production environment.
