Equality and Diversity is • NOT a specialist subject - it is everyone's business because it affects everyone, whether short sighted, with access to slow internet connections, with English as a second language or with limited skills - we are all Unequal and Diverse. • Question – How specialist are you?

  3. Name your Technology(hardware/software, apps, social media) • Who has what with them? • What do you work/use daily? • What do your learners have access to? • What would they like to use? • Have you any learners who are legally entitled to assistive technologies? • How do you know? • Who pays and how do you support them?

  4. How do you keep up? • How do you keep up with trends ? • How do you convert colleagues? • Where do you find out about new (or old but valued) resources/techniques? • Do you get the credit/accreditation/pay? • Better still have the respect for this knowledge? • How will you share today’s knowledge

  5. Do you end up as CPD Guru? • Have you tried to explain? • Twitter • Plagiarism • QR Codes • Or that someone with Visual impairment or even fully blind can use an iPad or iPhone.

  6. Learner Comments In the last five years the same result “I would like the people who support my IT to understand it and be able to assist me when I get into difficulties” More recently (Gareth) “ Having control of my e-portfolio is the first time I have controlled my IT system” aged 20!!

  7. Enabling Technologies (versus assistive) • E Guides/RSCs etc should already be aware of some free applications and techniques. • Accessibility Essentials , Upwardly Mobile, Mobile InfoKit, the bundles of applications such as Access Apps etc • E-safety Toolkits (RSC) • HMP Winchesters looking seriously at Xerte as a realistic option

  8. Expectations Expectations!!! • As the rate of change appears to speed up • Who are we leaving behind? • What are their issues • Do you know? • How would we collectively find out? • How can we help? • OASES may help

  9. Awareness of the Basics is still essential • Accessible Documentation • Audio loss (simple guides) • Search Google effectively • Using Sticky Notes to aid memory • So how do you find out about Free things? • OATS, TechDis, RSCs, NIACE, LSIS, etc etc • But most of all USERS!!

The Department of Business, Innovation & Skills - Listened to Learners • Funding now for Seven Projects • Small Business Research Initiative • The production of the English Voice • To include all FE & Skills learners • The TechDis ToolBox • Learner Ambassadors • Extension of licenses for 3000 e-books for FE

  11. Libraries & Learning Resources are Vital! • Will Technology make them more equal? • E-Readers and e-Books • Scanning • Publisher Lookup • Reading Aid • Access • JISC Collections 3000 e-Books for FE

  12. Digital Inclusion is now a Global Issue • JISC TechDis Senior Advisor, working across 57 Countries on Free and Open Source Software – currently in Tanzania • But how do providers know about Freemium Services • Dragon being an obvious one • Balabolka

  13. So looking forward • What do we see as the key issues? • Is it the Technology? • Is it the Skills of the Tutors? • Is it budget? • Is it Management? • Is it Future proofing? • Or something else?
