  1. 17.3 Local Temperature Variations

  2. Intensity of insolation (solar radiation)

  3. Time of year- during the summer the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun- so we receive stronger sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere

  4. The Earth tilts the Northern Hemisphere away from the sun during the winter months

  5. Cloud cover affects how much of the suns rays warms the earth- so it could keep us cooler • Other times the cloud cover keeps the heat close to the ground

  6. Heating of water and land • Summers at the beach- the sun heats the sand more quickly than the water • Why?

  7. b/c the sun only warms the first few centimeters of sand and goes thru several meters of water

  8. Which cools faster at night Sand or Water?

  9. At night the sand cool faster than the water

  10. Temperature maps • Continents are warmer than oceans in the summer and • Continents are cooler in the winter than the ocean

  11. The lines on a weather map that show same temperatures are called isotherms
