  1. Here is the situation… we’ve taken the lead by 2! There are 3 seconds left on the clock. What should we do on the kick off?

  2. Well, let’s go ahead and do some brainstorming!

  3. We need 4 seconds of hang time for our team to get down field.

  4. If we kick it into the end zone, it’ll be a touchback and they’ll have a shot at our end zone.

  5. If we kick it too short, they could return it for a touchdown and we would lose the game.

  6. We’ll avoid kicking it to the side to prevent it from going out of bounds and taking a penalty.

  7. WHAT DO WE GOTTA DO? • Put it in the air for 4 seconds. • Place in in the centered with respect to the side lines. • Kick it at least past the 20 yard line. • Don’t kick it into the end zone. • So… how about the 10 yard line?

  8. Let’s Get Our Data Together! • Change in x-position is… 60 yards!

  9. Let’s Get Our Data Together • Change in y-position is… Well, the ball starts on the ground and finishes on the ground… so 0!

  10. Let’s Get Our Data Together • We’ve already said we need 4 seconds! • Also, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 meters per second squared. • Let’s convert the 60 yards into meters…

  11. Sort It All Out

  12. What Do We Need? How fast do we need to kick the ball and at what angle?

  13. Let’s Start With the X-Direction

  14. X-Direction Velocity a = 0

  15. What Do We Need? How fast do we need to kick the ball and at what angle?

  16. Let’s Now Get the Y-Direction

  17. Y-Direction Velocity

  18. Now Use the Pythagorean Theorem

  19. Now Use the Pythagorean Theorem

  20. Now Use the Pythagorean Theorem

  21. Now Use Trig to Get the Angle

  22. The Answer!!! Kick the ball with a velocity of 23.94 meters per second at a 55.04 degree angle to the field!

  23. THE END!
