  1. The Deity of Christ The Godhead—Part 3

  2. Many Question the Deity of Christ • They refer to the follow Scriptures: • John 14:28: “My Father is greater than I.” • Col. 1:15: “…the firstborn over all creation.” • Luke 22:42: “Not My will, but Yours, be done.” • Heb. 5:7: “…offered up prayers…to Him who was able to save Him from death…” • Heb. 5:8: “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience…”

  3. Many Question the Deity of Christ • None of these passages deny the Deity of Christ, they only help us understand His role in the Godhead. • It is because of misunderstanding of these Scriptures that some deny Christ’s Deity (2 Pet. 3:16). • We will see where His Deity is affirmed in Scripture, and examine these texts that we may know the truth.

  4. Colossians 2:9 • “In Him dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” • From where we get the term “Godhead”—having the nature of God. • This nature of being God is attributed to Jesus. • More on this later.

  5. O.T. Prophesied of the Deity of Christ • Isa. 9:6: “Unto us a Son is given…and His name shall be called…Mighty God…” • Ps. 110:1: “The Lord said to My Lord” (Matt. 22:41-45). • Ps. 102: 24-27: “O my God…of old You laid the foundations of the earths” (Heb. 1:8, 10-12). • Mic. 5:2: “Whose goings forth are from old, from everlasting” (Matt. 2:6).

  6. Jesus Affirms His Deity • John 8:57-59: “Before Abraham was, I AM” (Ex. 3:14) • John 5:16-18: “…God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.” • Rev. 1:8: “I am…the Almighty”

  7. N.T. Affirms the Deity of Christ Colossians 2:9 • “In Him dwells”: dwell, reside, house permanently. • “the fullness”: That of which a thing is full, completion. • “of the Godhead”: The state or quality of being God. • “bodily”: in His body.

  8. N.T. Affirms the Deity of Christ The Complete State or Quality of Being God

  9. N.T. Affirms the Deity of Christ The Godhead dwells in Him bodily. • John 1:1-3: “…the word was God.” • Not: “a god” (NWT), but “Theos, een ho Logos,” lit. “God, was the Word” • “a god” changes original-it is an addition. • John 1:14: “and the Word became flesh.” • Gal. 4:23: “born according to the flesh.” • Phil. 2:7-8: “taking the form of a bondservant…being in appearance as a man.”

  10. Became flesh,Dwelt among us John 1:14 Took the form of a bondservant Phil. 2:6-7 N.T. Affirms the Deity of Christ John 1:1 Heaven Father Word HolySpirit Col. 2:9 In this bodily form, He retained the fullness of the Godhead!

  11. N.T. Affirms the Deity of Christ • Matt. 1:23: “God with us.” • John 20:28: “My Lord and my God.” • Titus 2:13: “…our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” • Heb. 1:8: “Your throne, O God, is forever…”
