  4. How can Friends make a difference? Friends improve the library by keeping a pulse on the needs of the community. What services, programs, and material does the community want? Friends supplement what cannot be provided by the library budget with funds, materials, equipment and services.

  5. Where to start?How to organize a Friends Group. Determine the purpose. Select a steering committee to reflect your community. Work on Federal and State tax-exempt status. Develop a constitution and bylaws. Define the dues structure and membership categories. Decide on membership brochure and logo art work. Begin publicity campaign in community.

  7. OfficersWhat’s my role? President- Sets agenda for meetings, runs the Friends meetings, and represents the Friends Group within the community. Vice-President- Supports the mission of the Friends and performs President’s duties in their absence. Treasurer- Maintains records of all monetary transactions, balances budget, manages bank account, and gives financial reports to the Friends Group. Secretary- Records minutes for each board meeting and reports the minutes of the prior board meeting.

  10. Role of Friends Friends and Trustees are citizens who choose to help their local libraries. Their goals are similar, but their paths to achieve them differ. • Friends are citizens who value the service of public libraries and volunteer to help them. • Friends usually operate with a self-elected board of directors, representing the community. • Friends may be future trustees and trustees may be members of the Friends; however, there should be no overlapping boards. • Friends are kept informed of the library's plans, progress and problems. • Friends support trustee board decisions. • Friends serve as "connecting links" between the library and community. • Friends supplement what cannot be provided by the library budget . • Fundraising by the Friends is done with the knowledge of the trustees and in coordination with the library director. • Individually and collectively, Friends use their influence to assist the library in obtaining desired financial support, representing the library point of view to legislators and the media. • A Friends written policy should include representation from or liaison with the Trustees.
