  4. REPLACES: autoexec.bat, config.sys, system.ini, and win.ini • THE REGISTRY CAN NOT BE EDITED DIRECTLY – A REGISTRY EDITING PROGRAM IS REQUIRED • THE MOST FAMILIAR REGISTRY EDITOR IS MICROSOFT’S REGISTRY EDITOR

  5. ROOT KEYS AND TASKS • HKEY_CURRENT USER - Configuration information for the user profile of the currently logged on user . The user's folders, screen colors, and Control Panel settings are stored here. • HKEY_USERS - Contains configuration information for all users; the data of HKCU is a subkey to HKU.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Contains configuration information that affects all users relative to O/S settings and installed software preferences. • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - The information stored here makes sure that the correct program opens when you open a file; i.e.; what application to open when clicking on a file extension (e.g. *.doc) is stored here. This is a subkey of HKLM\ Software. There is a lot of inter-relationship between HKCR, HKLM and HKU.

  7. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG - Contains information about hardware profiles – the way the user wishes to use the hardware and other settings used by your computer at system startup.

  13. WARNING The two most important things to know about Registry Editor are that it copies your changes immediately into the Registry and that it has no Undo command. Registry Editor doesn’t wait for you to issue a File/Save command before making changes permanent. Once altered Registry data is gone forever – unless you remember the prior values and restore them yourself or have separately prepared some form of BACKUP.
