Defining Diversity/Multicultural Education • Diversity : differences among students. • Language, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, family structure, sexual orientation, and cognitive abilities are all examples of differences you may encounter. • Teachers need to be educated to be sensitive to and appreciate the diversity found within the classroom.

  3. Bilingual Education • All children deserve an education, even those in the language minority. • Learn key phrases to facilitate lessons. • Pictures, gestures & symbols should be utilized. • GO THE EXTRA MILE!

  4. Show movies that address the topic of racism and discuss. Include examples of historically important persons of different races Group students in diverse work groups Promote awareness of diverse cultural practices in the world Do not tolerate racist comments or attitudes in the classroom Model exemplary behavior at all times Strategies to Reduce the Effects of Racism in the Classroom

  5. Becoming Aware of Diversity Among Your Students • Talk to your students • Really listen to their comments and suggestions • Make contact with the parent or guardian • PAY ATTENTION!
