  3. Jesus’ Disciples What qualities do you think the people saw in Jesus that made them want to follow Him? **Why might someone want to follow Him NOW ? (when he is not around physically?) To define apostle and disciple To describe the qualities needed for being a disciple and an apostle To explain why Jesus chose fishermen and tax collectors

  4. Disciples & APostles • The Disciples • The followers Jesus picked were called “disciples”. He had many disciples – over 70. “Disciple” is latin for “ listen”. • Jesus wanted his followers to listen to his teaching, so that one day, they would know enough to go out by themselves and live as He did. 12 of the 70 became his core group of disciples, and followed him everywhere. • The Apostles • Jesus gave some of his disciples authorityto preach and heal in his name, and sent them out on missions. They became known as “Apostles” (he who is sent out). After Jesus’ death & resurrection, the Apostles were given responsibility for passing on Jesus’ message & organising the other disciples. What does the word “disciple” mean? Why is it important to spend time as a disciple, “listening” ? What is an apostle? How is an apostle different from a disciple? **What can you do now, to be a disciple?

  5. Jesus calls his disciples What sort of people did Jesus call as his disciples in • Mark 1:16-20 • Mark 2:13? What did Jesus say when he called them? What did they do when he called? Why do you think they reacted like this? **Why do you think Jesus chose fishermen and tax collectors instead of educated priests as disciples?

  6. Could you be a disciple? QUALITIES of a DISCIPLE Intelligent? Ambitious for fame or power? God-fearing? Looking for a quiet life? rich? Willing to believe the unbelievable big hearted? gentle and kind? risk-takers? educated ? soft-living? honest ? disappointed with life? hard-working? Jesus’s disciples would have to put up with long journeys, long hours helping, healing and preaching to people, and expect to meet hostility and rejection. What sort of people should he choose? Write a brief advert for a shop window. Include: - what sort of character a disciple should have - What sort of life they can expect as a disciple of Jesus
