  6. History in My Hometown • Naval Aviation in Pensacola In 1825, the US Navy built a naval base in Pensacola. The protected harbor and ample timber provided a perfect location. In 1911, the Navy closed the base, due to lack of use.

  7. History in My Hometown • With the invention of the airplane, the Navy realized its use and needed a location to research aircraft and train pilots. • In 1914, the USS Mississippi arrived and reopened the base, making it the first Naval Air Station with 9 officers and 24 enlisted men

  8. History in My Hometown • In 1915, Lt. Cmdr. Mustin flew an airplane off the USS North Carolina, moving in Pensacola Bay, making it the first aircraft carrier takeoff. • By 1918, over 1000 men had been trained to fly at NAS Pensacola. (www.pensacolahistory.org)

  9. History in My Hometown • With WWII, Pensacola grew and by 1944 had trained over 12,000 pilots.

  10. History in My Hometown • Economic Impact of Naval Aviation: Today, over 29,500 people are employed by the military in the Pensacola Area. Another 150,000 people are employed in various jobs. Approximately 4000 enlisted personnel train in Pensacola each year, adding economic growth to businesses, theatres, and restaurants.

  11. History in My Hometown • Museum of Naval Aviation • Located at NAS Pensacola, this museum has one of the finest collection of aircraft in the world. • Approximately 1 million people visit each year—adding to the economic growth of Pensacola.
